Sweet food of Valencia: easter cake
The «mona de Pascua» is a gift for the children (godchildren, grandchildren, nephews or children, according to the regions) and the people in the Valencian Community eat it to celebrate the Easter.
Recipe:
- Basically it consists of panquemado with an egg put in the center and decorated before place it into the oven.
In certain areas the “monas de Pascua” have the shape of an object or animal: chicken, snake, monkey, child, dragon… In La Safor, they call them ‘sarvachos’.
In the city of Valencia people make a variety of “monas de Pascua” elaborated with a dough
similar to that of the mantecadas, but flavored and adorned above with anise.
It is customary that the family and young people go out to the field to eat the “mona de Pascua” with lots of fun. In addition of the panquemado and the eggs they snack lettuce and a thin sausage called longaniza of Easter. This Festival continues on Monday and Tuesday following and even in the festivity of San Vicente Ferrer.
